This is getting ridiculous: Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds

It’s no secret that most recent Playstation 3 games have either mandatory or optional installations that take up several gigabytes of space.  The appropriateness of mandatory installs in a console game is debatable, but most developers say that the installs lead to improved performance.

I see no problem with mandatory installs in moderation.  It can be annoying to come home with a brand new game, and have to wait an extra five or ten minutes play, but it’s no big deal.  I even install most optional installations just in case there is an improvement.

So  when I played Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds for the first time,  I wasn’t all that annoyed that there was an mandatory install.  It was rather alarming that the install was 4gb, though, since it’s just a golf game with cartoon-like graphics.  That seems  excessive.  For reference, SOCOM: Confrontations reportedly weighs in around 2gb.

After playing a few rounds and enjoying myself quite a bit, I decided to hop into the multiplayer portion of the game to see what options there were.  I was greeted by a patch download.

A patch download clocking in at over 3.8gb. That’s right, nearly four gigabytes.

I would imagine that the patch is the entire multiplayer portion of the game, which begs the question as to why it isn’t on the blu-ray disc on the first place. or what.  It is absurd that In order to play Hot Shots Golf online, you need nearly eight gigabytes of space free, and that’s ignoring game saves or replays.  For players with a 20gb PS3, that takes up about half the usable space on the hard drive.

Needless to say, I didn’t download the patch.  I’ll be enjoying the game offline.
